A walk in the secluded Raincliffe Woods, just outside Scarborough. Great for a crisp Autumn day. From the start make your way to Throxenby Mere, a small lake and then climb to the top of the woods and walk its perimeter before walking through the woods back to the car park. Spot the statues along the way. Great for dog walking.
General Safety Tips: Wear boots as the going will be muddy after rain. Keep your eyes on the ground for exposed tree roots - take a walking stick. The climb to the top of the woods is a strenuous one.
The Raincliffe Woods Walk
Getting There
From Middlesbrough, follow the A171 to Whitby. From Whitby follow the road to Scarborough sticking to the A171. As you enter Scarborough, before the hospital, turn right onto Hackness Road and follow this road. Turn left onto Red Scar Lane. Look out for a triangle junction and turn right onto Low Road. Follow this road round to the Raincliffe Gate car park on your left. Parking is free of charge.

The Walk
From the car park head to the left corner near a sign and leave the car park on the path.
Keep ahead on the path until you reach a crossing path.
Follow the path as it makes its way through the woods.
When you come to a fork in the path keep right on the higher path
Keep on the path ahead slightly in a right direction.
When you come to a junction with a log blocking your way, turn left on a path that avoids the log.
Turn left and follow the path ahead
Follow the path as it descends through the trees.
Descend carefully through the woods approaching Throxenby Mere and a boardwalk.
Turn right on the boardwalk and there are picnic tables ahead for a pit-stop to feed the ducks!.
After your break, basically double back and climb the woods on the path you came from before the picnic tables.
The climb is a steady one- keep following in the direction of the waymarks.
Keep climbing passing the log you saw earlier.
Keep climbing passing the sign for Lady Ediths Ride on your right.
As you reach the top head right towards a metal gate following the direction of a blue waymark.
Follow this path as it stays on the perimeter of the woods for about a mile.
The path enters the woods for a period - stick as close as possible to the edge of the woods.
At an intersection of three paths, stick to the one that heads downwards slightly to your right and ahead.
Stay on this path stepping over a log.
Shortly, the path comes to some steps. Head down them onto a boardwalk.
Turn right onto a main path and head into a car park.
Stick to the main path through the woods for a while
At a fork in the path, follow a left path as it branches to the left.
Follow this path and when another crosses it turn left onto this path.
Follow the path as it passes trees and then down to another boardwalk and the car park.
Raincliffe Woods
Raincliffe Woods are situated to the north-west of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. They form an "L" shape with Forge Valley Woods and the River Derwent.
The area is a mixed woodland area designated as "planted ancient woodland",and combined with Forge Valley Woods is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
There are many paths, tracks and bridleways through the small woods which many residents of Scarborough use for mountain biking, dog walking and Sunday strolls. Throxenby Mere a popular place for fishermen is located at the foot of the woods.
Deer, badgers, squirrels, frogs, toads, foxes and all kinds of birds can be seen in the woods.
