Although this walk start from the beautiful Digley Reservoir, its a stunning walk around its surrounds, which includes some amazing sights as you climb above the reservoir and cross Blackpool bridge and walk on the moors. Added to that is its location in Last of The Summer Wine country with Holmfirth near by. A superb walk to wake you from the slumbers of winter into Spring/Summer.
General Safety Tips: As the walk is on high ground you may need to consider sun protection even in March. There are some very narrow squeeze stiles on the final part back to the car park. You may need to climb over the odd closed gate.
The Digley Reservoir Walk
From Middlesbrough follow the A19 to the M1 southbound to Leeds. At junction 39 turn off onto Denby Dale Road which is the A636 and then onto Wakefield Road. Head through Denby Dale onto Barnsley Road. Head into Holmfirth. Passing through Holmfirth head into Holmbridge. Just after the The Pickled Pheasant Pub turn right and head up to the reservoir. There is a car park on your left or if this is full there is another one across the reservoir and left and up a short climb- the car park is free of charge.

The Walk
From the car park head left and cross the reservoir.
Turn left at the end of the road and head towards the curve in the road to the right- look for a gate before the bend and head through it.
Head along the path and up some steps to the other car park.
Turn left at the top and follow the path.
Keep on the left at a fork in the path and then head round to the left and down some steps
Head over the ford and keep on the path ahead
Turn right at a junction
Keep on the path and at a fork take the right hand path which climbs up
Follow the path as it curves to the right and ahead
Turn left and follow the path again
Go through a gate and keep on the path ahead
Just before you come to a junction and a path coming from the right, look for a stile and sign and head down the field on your right.
Go through a gate and head left downhill.
Head down to a bridge which is Blackpool bridge and this an excellent place for a pitstop!
Head over the bridge and climb up the path on the other side
The path winds its way over the moors and eventually curves to the left
Meeting a path coming from the right join it and turn left heading on a straight path ahead
Keep on the path going through a series of gates and stiles
Head into the village of Holme and passing a school look for a signpost before a barn 50m ahead on your left.
Turn left onto a flagstoned path and onto a field head diagonally through a stile
Head through the fields via squeeze stiles and eventually onto the path below
Turn right onto the path which takes you back to the car park.
Digley Reservoir
Digley Reservoir is a reservoir located downstream of Bilberry Reservoir, 2 miles (3.2 km) south west of Holmfirth, in West Yorkshire, England. The reservoir was planned during the 1930s, with much land being bought for its construction, but it was not completed until 1954.
The area is associated with the TV sitcom ‘Last of the Summer Wine’, which was filmed in Holmfirth and the surrounding areas. The reservoir has a picnic area, two free car parks and there are also some benches around the lake that provide a quiet place of reflection. There are two main walking routes, the long walking route is 5 miles (8 km) and goes as far as Blackpool Bridge in Holmfirth. The shorter route is an easy circular Peak District walk around the reservoirs, which starts at the car park at the North Eastern end of the reservoir, off Gibriding Lane. It leads around to the North End of the reservoir on Kirklees Way, passing by Bilberry reservoir through to Digley Wood on the southern side of the water, before returning to the car park using Fieldhead Lane. The reservoir is also one of the waypoints on the Yorkshire Water Way.
The reservoir is a source of water for Yorkshire and Yorkshire Water provide the free car parking plus walking route maps to follow. Their Digley, Bilberry and Beyond Walk is 5.5 miles (8.9 km) long and the Digley Walk is 1.5 miles (2.4 km). The Peak District Boundary Walk runs along the west side of the reservoir.
